Mr & Mrs Davidson - Edinburgh
THE BRIEF
Nestled in the centre of area of Edinburgh, this project centred on transforming a series of disconnected spaces into a large, open-plan living environment designed around modern family life. The clients, a young entrepreneurial couple with a passion for design, wanted a space that would seamlessly combine cooking, dining, entertaining and relaxation while maintaining a strong connection to both the garden and the wider home.
The existing 1970s extension felt dark, cold and detached from the rest of the property. Their vision was to create a light-filled, contemporary space that felt calm, sociable and effortlessly functional. Importantly, they wanted the kitchen to feel more like bespoke furniture than traditional cabinetry - an architectural feature integrated within the home rather than the dominant element of the room.
Openness was a key priority throughout the brief. The clients favoured low-level cabinetry and uninterrupted sightlines over large banks of storage, ensuring the kitchen remained visually unobtrusive and connected to the surrounding living spaces. They were also passionate about materials, craftsmanship and technology, seeking a design that balanced clean contemporary lines with warmth, texture and personality.

THE DESIGN CONCEPT
The resulting design is a beautifully considered open-plan space that combines architectural simplicity with exceptional functionality. By opening up a number of smaller rooms and completely reimagining the extension, the design team created a light, expansive environment that feels both highly contemporary and deeply connected to the character of the home.
At its heart is a large central island that anchors the room while maintaining clear sightlines across the kitchen, dining and lounge areas. A carefully curated palette of LEICHT's textured Brasilia concrete cabinetry, seamless micro-cement surfaces and bespoke oak detailing creates a calm, contemporary feel with subtle industrial influences. Rather than introducing large banks of storage, the design prioritises openness and architectural simplicity, with intelligent storage solutions integrated discreetly throughout.
A bespoke oak veneered bulkhead spanning the rear wall serves as both a striking design feature and a practical solution, concealing the extractor system and integrated lighting while adding warmth and texture to the space. Premium appliances from Siemens and Gaggenau, alongside a dedicated drinks station featuring a Quooker tap and secondary sink, ensure the kitchen performs as beautifully as it looks.

We are absolutely delighted with the finished result. From the outset, the Dundas team took the time to understand not only our design preferences, but also how we wanted the space to function for family life and entertaining. The kitchen has completely transformed how we use our home and has become the space where we spend most of our time together as a family.
