THE BRIEF

Set within a beautifully proportioned Edinburgh maisonette, this project sought to transform an outdated and enclosed kitchen into a light-filled, contemporary space suited to modern family life. The home, occupied by a young family of three, offered strong architectural character, including generous sash and case windows and original detailing, which the design needed to respect and enhance.

The brief centred on creating a calm, cohesive environment that would maximise natural light while introducing a more open, sociable layout. The existing kitchen, previously disconnected from the main living space, was to be repositioned and integrated, allowing for improved flow and interaction between rooms.

Functionally, the space needed to work hard within a relatively compact footprint - accommodating not only the practical demands of everyday cooking, but also providing a comfortable and inviting area for dining and entertaining. A key requirement was to achieve this without compromising the clean, minimal aesthetic the clients were drawn to, inspired by a palette of soft neutrals, natural textures and refined, contemporary detailing.

THE DESIGN CONCEPT

The design reimagines the kitchen as the central hub of the home, seamlessly connected to the adjacent living area through a carefully considered reconfiguration and the introduction of a square archway. This intervention allows light to travel freely between spaces, enhancing the sense of openness while maintaining subtle definition between zones.

At the heart of the scheme is a sculptural island, finished in a high-gloss Dekton surface in Taga. Its reflective quality amplifies natural light, while the monolithic form is softened by the addition of a bespoke curved breakfast bar. This tailored element is both practical and expressive - offering a space-efficient dining solution that encourages gathering, while introducing a gentle contrast to the otherwise linear architecture.

The cabinetry by Leicht, executed in a soft cashmere tone, is deliberately understated. Handleless and full-height, it creates a calm, architectural backdrop that conceals integrated appliances and maximises storage. This includes a cleverly designed hidden corner pantry with an electronic push-to-open mechanism, maintaining visual simplicity while optimising functionality.

Materiality plays a key role in defining the atmosphere of the space. The warmth of the timber flooring and dining chairs complements the neutral cabinetry, while the subtle veining of the worktop and splashback introduces texture and depth. These finishes respond dynamically to the changing natural light throughout the day.

The transformation has been incredible. It’s now a light-filled, sociable space that works beautifully for our family and how we live. The curved breakfast bar is our favourite spot. The whole space feels warm, welcoming and effortlessly functional.
